Call of Duty schwankt seit jeher zwischen Realismus und Spektakel – und die Diskussion um alberne Skins flammt mit Black Ops 7 erneut auf. In Black Ops 6 tauchten Beavis und Butthead, die Ninja Turtles und sogar ein grell leuchtendes Regenbogen-Einhorn auf. 
Für manche Spieler sind solche Outfits witzige Abwechslung, für andere zerstören sie die Atmosphäre und beeinträchtigen die Übersicht im Spiel.
Associate Creative Director Miles Leslie sprach im Vorfeld der BO7-Enthüllung: „Wir hören der Community zu und versuchen, ein Gleichgewicht zu finden, damit sich alle repräsentiert fühlen, ohne dass die Fairness darunter leidet.“ Damit räumt Activision indirekt ein: Bunte Skins bringen Umsatz, können aber Veteranen vergraulen, die ein ernsteres Setting erwarten.
Parallel dazu setzt Battlefield 6 bewusst auf Bodenständigkeit. Design Director Shashank Uchil erklärte unmissverständlich: „Keine Nicki Minaj. Wir bleiben realistisch.“ Dieser Kontrast verstärkt den Druck auf Call of Duty: Bleibt man bei der Fortnite-artigen Show, die Kassen klingeln lässt, oder geht man zurück zu nüchternem Militär-Shooter-Flair?
Die Fans sind gespalten. Manche werfen Activision vor, eher auf Einnahmen als auf Feedback zu hören – schließlich wurden schrille Skins bereits bei der Vorbestellung beworben. Andere wünschen sich ein simples Feature: die Möglichkeit, fremde Skins im Menü auszublenden. Veteranen erinnern sich zudem gerne an Zeiten, in denen man für neue Maps zahlte, statt für bunte Outfits.
Trotz aller Kritik: Das Herzstück von Call of Duty ist und bleibt das Gameplay. Genau das fesselt die Community – auch wenn man mal von Beavis mit einem 360-Quickscope erledigt wird oder Donatello direkt im Spawn lauert. Black Ops 7 muss nun beweisen, dass Spaß und Fairness vereinbar sind, ohne die Stammspieler zu verlieren.
